Best Berry Dessert: Keep it Simple

The Very Best Berry Dessert: Keep It Simple

So, what do we do with all those berries we grow? Mostly we eat them fresh, seconds after we pick them. This time of year, post-strawberries and pre-blueberries, I send my kids out to graze the raspberry canes for their first breakfast each morning, and they help themselves during the day whenever they’re hungry for a snack.

10 Minutes of Summer Bounty: Raspberries, Strawberries, Fresh Eggs

We freeze a gallon or two each day for the short raspberry season, make a pie or two, and this year we’ll mix up more shrub, too. But my girls’ very favorite berry dessert is the simplest:

  • Fresh Berries, any type or combination
  • Whipped Cream
  • Brown Sugar

Whip the cream with a dash of vanilla.

Serve each person a plate with a field of berries, a mountain of whipped cream, and a beach of brown sugar.

This is finger food: Pick up a berry, dance it through the whipped cream, dust it with sugar. Eat. Repeat.

At the end, take all of the crushed berries, the remnants of the cream and sugar, mash it all together, and eat it with a spoon.
